What if Opel(owned by Peugeot) is g
oing to be sold in America under the Chrysler badge? GM would likely kick itself.

It seems like the auto industry is headed towards a Bell-System- type monopoly where there’s only a few auto groups left selling different flavors of the same product.

I forgot about this, and this is exciting. I think those are both boosts Opel and Chrysler need.

A bit offtopic but i stumbled on this the other day (the 2nd gen C5 (2010-2017) had the same chassis as the 407) :

I’ll take one Chrysler 400 please; aka DS9.

I actually really wanted this to happen. The brands really do seem to fit together better than any others I can think of and the company has proven it's willing to try some crazy things (ie Hellcat), though I don't trust them to actually market any of the PSA vehicles they might bring over. I would love to see GM look at an Opel vehicle successfully marketed (what an idea!) and be successful. That middle picture of the hatchback, that is a sharp looking vehicle. Somewhat of a market niche untapped. Remember how 10 years ago Lexus had moderate success selling a hatchback? What a different time.

I really think Chrysler could be a good name swap candidate for DS, which seems to be more suited to American tastes than Citroen, sad to say.
![]() 05/23/2020 at 14:07 |

I think that would be the best way to bring the DS line here. I can’t see bringing any of the nameplates that the general public doesn’t recognize as going well.

Please point on this map of the world to your home country. Now, please spell Peugeot. Now, please pronounce . . . hey wait where you going? To the Ferd stealershi p?
I wish we had Citroen here but looking at their current lineup, I wish we had 2008 Citroen. I would totally rock a modern Peugeot though even if it said Chrysler on the front.

How am I supposed to drive around in a car that’s got them weird dots above the e? Bubba’ll accuse me of surrendering every time I lose a drag race in a French car.
![]() 05/23/2020 at 14:19 |

Bubba would be driving a Chevrolet, Cadillac, Pontiac or any of those other typical American names that have nothing to do with French at all.

Exactly! A good ole fashioned American na.....wait a minute!!

Bubba would be driving a beater F150 full of empty beer cans.

T hat’s the Opel Corsa, the German answer to the Ford Fiesta, currently being built on t he award winning, Peugeot 208 platform.

That is a sharp looking subcompact! I like that golden yellow color too.

This is what the DS9 actually looks like. Could make a good third gen Chrysler 200 if they decide to move Chrysler to an upmarket brand again, and then have a more luxurious rear drive 300. Or bring back the Imperial name and slap it on fancier Chryslers.
![]() 05/23/2020 at 20:05 |

How does it compare size wise to the 200 and 300? It looks like a pretty long car, but I know pictures can be deceiving.
![]() 05/23/2020 at 20:50 |
|
It’s based on the 508, so think midsize sedan or compact luxury sized (A4, 3 series, Camry, Accord, etc). I think the wheelbase is also slightly longer to make it more “luxurious”, and because they probably expect to sell quite a few in China where they like their big back seats.
Either way the 300 is for sure larger when it comes to height and width, even if they may or may not be a similar length.
![]() 05/23/2020 at 21:17 |
|
Its actually based on the 508L which is the long wheelbase 508 for the chinese market.
The DS9 is 4.93m long (~16.2ft) while the 508L is 4.86m long (~15.9ft), the normal 508 is 4.75m long (~15.6ft) and the SW is 4.77m long.
Bonus :

I don’t know why GM should kick itself should Opel come to the US by this route. I don’t see how FCA/Peuge ot would make any money selling a Buick without even the benefit of the Buick badge that honestly isn’t helping Buick that much anyway. I only see it if they were to pull back from the old GM styled models and make something different.
![]() 05/23/2020 at 22:01 |

Th ey might not have the right to sell models based on old GM platforms on “new” markets (but i m ight be wrong) and almost no model are still using those anymore (i think its only the Insigna and the Astra that are both past the middle of their commercial “ l ife” ) so there is no big risk to see a Chrysler based on a GM platform.

The rights based on the mechanicals are an issue I’ll admit I don’t have the answers for. I’m just thinking of the market justification, about which I also have to admit I have no expertise.

Typically Euro cars go through a mid-life facelift, say after 4-5 years, before a re-model, usually 8-9 years after the original came out. So PSA will be looking at how to make the Insignia/Regal on the Peugeot 508 platform.
The Vauxhall/Opel Corsa was half way through development under GM when they were bought by PSA, according to a CEO at Vauxhall, they swapped the platform (took 3 months) to that of the Peugeot 208.

The new PSA Vauxhall Corsa is nice and all.
But I still like the previous gen Corsa
Especially in green metallic.

Thanks you for the information. It definitely looked bigger than that in the photos. I had expected it to at least be 5 series sized.

I love how perfectly unrealistically clean every single thing in this video is.

The DS9 is almost the same length as the current 5 series ( G30) with 4.93m vs 4.94m and the 508 (not L) is slightly longer than the current 3 series with 4.75m vs 4.71m .

Ooh that is a nice green. Does the current gem not come in two door?
![]() 05/24/2020 at 10:44 |

No the new Corsa is now just a five door hatchback.
Three door hatchbacks have been dying out a little in the last few years.
There’s still the Abarth and Fiat 500, Audi S3 Sportback, Citroen C1/Peugeot 108 ,
The Ford Fiestas,
Mini and the VW UP!
A similar green is available on some Skodas,
Citigo, Fabia, Scala and Octavia.

PSA has to pay royalties to GM for all GM-developed platforms, so they have been fairly quick to replace them with PSA platforms. For instance most of the vans and SUVs have been switched already , the previous Corsa was replaced by an “all-new” one after just four years on the market. Currently the last holdovers are the Insignia and Astra I believe.

A Citroen V8 never existed and does not need to exist *c ompletely ignores the 1934 Traction Avant 22CV*, but Peugeot can IMO get away with an RWD V8

I think the Fabia pulls it off best.
Also, the new Fiesta looks so angry. I’d still like to have it over here but it seems so spiteful and mean.
The VW Up is the only one I think could have moderate success here with the right marketing (a la Smart).

The 3 door A3/ S3 is not a thing anymore, apart from the Fiesta all the remaining 3 doors are from smaller cars than the Corsa.
And while the previous Corsa was not looking bad, it was based on the very old Fiat Grande Punto (that started in 2005 and ended in 2018) platform and was if i recall correctly about 150kg more than the new one.

The Clio 3 R. S. has the alien green that was also suiting it quite well (most of the pictures of it are unfortunately not making it look good at all ) :
Not sure if its paint or a wrap on these Megane 4 R. S. but its not too bad either :

Most (all?) of the vans were already not on GM platforms but rebadged PSA, FCA or Renault products ; they replaced the models that were Renault clones with models that are PSA clones last year .
For example the Renault Trafic III, Fiat Talento II, Nissan NV300, Opel/Vauxhall Vivaro II and Mitsubishi Express are all the same.
The “new” Vivaro since last year is now based on the Citroen Jumpy mk3 which is also sold as the Peugeot Expert and Toyota ProAce.
—
The Movano was a clone of the Renault Master III which is also sold as the Nissan NV400 but since last year its now a clone of the Citroën Jumper II, Peugeot Boxer II, Fiat Ducato III and Ram ProMaster.
—
The previous Opel Combo was a clone of the Fiat Doblò and the Ram ProM aster City, it has been replaced in 2008 by a clone of the Peugeot Partner, Citroën Berlingo and Toyota ProAce Cit y .

Ye’, it was me listing all the 3 door hatchbacks available regardless of size (I use the Automaker U.K. filters of ‘3 door’ and ‘hatchback’ and not an in-depth look).
The Audi S3 was what the Audi U.K. website had to order, though I was curious that an S3 was available to buy but not an A3.
The green of the Clio is nice, just a little too hard for me while the Skodas were more fitting for the Corsa green and in person I’ve found that unless quite close and on a sunny day can look quite flat.
The R.S.4 I’ve never seen in that colour or knew it was even available in that colour. But as the pictures are of the car in a wrap shop I'll leaning towards it being a wrap. Nice though, again, too dark for me.
